I recently had a great time finishing Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island on the Super NES Classic Edition so allow me to share my experience with this timeless 2D platformer.
Yoshi's Island is an amazing platformer from Nintendo that released back in 1995 and it added a lot to the Mario franchise. I borrowed Yoshi's Island from a friend in the early 2000s and have fond memories of playing it yet I never actually finished it. Anyway, I'm super-excited to talk about Yoshi's Island because it's among the very best that Nintendo has to offer. As one of Nintendo's console entries in the Mario franchise, Yoshi's Island got the care that also went into their very best titles. With that out of the way, let's get right to it!
Winged Clouds appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, its Game Boy Advance remake, Yoshi's Island DS, and Yoshi's New Island, and are found in almost every level. When a Yoshi hits a Winged Cloud with a Yoshi Egg, it disappears and reveals its contents or triggers an effect. Winged Clouds can contain objects such as flowers, five Stars, Extra lifes! Switches, but sometimes also. Yoshi's Island led to a strong year for Yoshi as a character. IGN's Thomas added that the hand-drawn style of Yoshi's Island made the computer-generated Donkey Kong Country appear outdated, though both games sold well, and Rareware included a Yoshi cameo in their sequel, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, released that same year. Jump to the platform with the Pirate Guy located above the Question Mark Winged Cloud. Then jump to the platform above and to the left to get a Flower. Be mindful of the Clawdaddy Crab enemy. These cannot be eaten but the foam can be removed with one Egg or Yoshi's tongue. After that, just toss an Egg at the Clawdaddy.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island looks and sounds incredible with its hand-crafted graphics and catchy soundtrack. The way it looks is imaginative and appropriate for a sunny island inhabited by friendly Yoshis. Nintendo even added little details like birds that hop around and flowers in the foreground. The effects such as the springing sound each time Yoshi jumps make moving around feel great, too.

Yoshi moves very differently than Mario and I've had more fun with him than I ever had playing as Mario. After you jump, you can hold the button down to flutter. Once you start falling, you can flutter again and you can travel a long distance if you time it correctly. You can also ground-pound to get rid of certain obstacles as well as eat enemies by extending your tongue to turn them into eggs then throw those eggs at enemies, coins, flowers, question mark clouds, or even Baby Mario. I love to use Yoshi's tongue for all sorts of tasks like holding off enemies, making eggs, and catching Baby Mario because it's something you can't do in any other game.

Wait until the pink enemy fully unrolls their path, and jump on their head to stun them. If you get hit, Baby Mario floats around in a bubble and lets out a cry that you'll remember forever. Your heart will race as you scramble to grab him in time before he's snatched away by Kamek's Toadies. The timer that counts down is different to anything that gamers had seen in other platformers and it makes the gameplay so much more fun than if it had a generic health system.

Another aspect that I enjoy about Yoshi's Island is its bosses. There are twelve castles and in each one, Kamek appears with a weak enemy standing under him and he uses his magic to make that enemy grow immensely. Even though it doesn't sound very creative, there are some very memorable bosses that I still remember from fifteen years ago such as the frog that you fight while inside its stomach, the slime that you have to chuck eggs at its heart, and the giant koopa that you have to use eggs to knock it onto its back. The different ways you fight them are definitely creative. Of course, the final boss is so iconic that it's still regularly discussed.
I love that every one of Yoshi's Island's 54 stages is packed with stuff to collect. Each one has five flowers, twenty red coins, and thirty stars that you need to collect for the maximum score. Once you achieve this score on all of the stages in a world, you'll unlock a secret stage. Collecting flowers also gives you a chance to play mini-games to acquire items or extra lives. I don't really care for these mini-games and I wish you could skip them somehow because you can beat Yoshi's Island easily without these items.

Finishing every secret stage is a huge task but if you're not interested and just want to complete the campaign then that's no problem. Personally, I just got as many points on each stage as I could without worrying about getting everything. I didn't end up unlocking any secret stages but I did get to visit a lot of hidden areas. It makes me wonder what my average score is..
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is an amazing and innovative platformer that no one was expecting to be so different from Super Mario World. Besides the sometimes annoying mini-games, there's virtually nothing I don't like. Could Yoshi's Island be the best 2D platformer of all time? I can't think of any other game that makes me feel as happy whenever I play it thanks to its music and colourful environments. It's certainly up there with other great games but then again, I have yet to play Super Mario Bros. 3 so who am I to say?

Sluggy The Unshaven's Fort is the mid-stage castle of World 5 in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. The fort features many spikes and moving platforms, a large viscous creature known as a Support Ghost that carries a Flatbed Ferry on its head, and an unusual spinning platform which functions much like a Chomp Rock on a track. The titular enemy of the fort, the Sluggy, is a small hairy slug enemy which can be found throughout the level, in two colors of off-white, slightly red and slightly blue. These slugs habitually fall off the ceiling onto Yoshi. Another notable slime is a Georgette Jelly, a pudding-like goo which falls to pieces if trod upon, but regenerates again after a few moments. These slimes can be swallowed and spit out as a bouncing ball. The level is also populated with Dangling Ghosts, large ghosts which cling to the ceiling and swing back and forth like a pendulum. When Yoshi gets too close, the ghost grabs Mario off his back, and retract. When the ceiling is too high, Yoshi is unable to reach him. However, hanging ghosts on high ceilings can't reach all the way to the floor, so it can sometimes be safe to crouch under them. The pendulum slimes can be made to stay still by being shot with an egg or having an enemy spit at them. The level also has the only normal Chain Chomp in the game. Overview[edit]At the start, the player is between a pendulum slime and a door. The door, to the left, leads to a room which is empty except for a Chain Chomp. Destroying the Chain Chomp reveals a secret door, leading to a Talking box with a secret message from the Mario Team to hold , and press , , , , (, , , , in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3) at the level select screen. Yoshi should shoot eggs at the slime to the right in order to pass. Not too far ahead is a very large, yellow platform that Yoshi can go across and get eggs, unless the platform were blocked off by stairs. This is the first of several times in the level where popping a Winged Cloud creates a staircase blocks off some area. However, it is possible to carefully walk past the first step of the stairs in order to get to the inaccessible area; jump while sanding at the base of the stairs, and press right (or left) at just the right moment. An alternative is to find a pipe or door to go through and come back, resetting the stairs so they haven't been made yet. Getting past this first staircase is a good idea because after the block of slime there is an invisible question mark cloud (just under the Fangs). The cloud yields some extra stars. Once Yoshi goes up those stairs, he should jump leftward off of them to collect a red coin, then continue left to retrieve a flower dangerously buried amid spikes. Bring plenty of eggs in order to get it. Then return to the stairs and travel to the right, avoiding spikes and enemies on the way. There is a tube which Yoshi can go down. Kill all the sluggies there to get a flower. Next, there is a red coin in the ceiling behind a breakable block. Then a yellow platform takes Yoshi over a bed of spikes, but not through the red coins hanging there. A round platform takes Yoshi back over the spikes, grabbing red coins on the way. This platform should be used like a chomp rock, constantly moving Yoshi to remain on top. Next is a single egg between two question mark clouds, each of which creates a staircase and blocks the creation of the other staircase. The staircase leading to the upper left brings Yoshi to three coins and the middle ring. It is a shortcut, which the player cannot take if he wishes to retrieve all the red coins. It is fine to create this staircase and collect the coins, but then use the trick described above to get past it's bottom step and backtrack a little in the level, to a tube Yoshi can go in. Come back out and create the staircase which goes upwards and to the right instead. Then it is possible to jump over to the left. After evading a hanging slime, break some blocks open with eggs to find some extra stars, and proceed to the left. Yoshis island 10 hours. Retrieved April 2, 2015. There is soon be a choice between two directions, a red coin lying in each. Grab both coins before making the choice. The drop to the left leads to a brief adventure with a slime which allows Yoshi to walk over spikes in order to retrieve some coins. Pressing down removes the slime from Yoshi's feet, so be careful not to press down over spikes. Going to the right instead similarly leads to many coins. Neither option leads to red coins, so it doesn't matter much. Shortly, Yoshi arrives at the same middle ring which the earlier shortcut stairs led to, but two red coins richer. Farther in the level, Yoshi and Baby Mario finds a Support Ghost that can move right, up, and down and must ride him to the red door at the end. Sometimes he stops and stretch his up body for Yoshi to reach higher areas. But not long after, he goes back down and if Yoshi is not on the platform on the Support Ghost when he moves away, he is stranded. Later, Yoshi is in a tight and long room filled with miniature sluggy enemies. Once Yoshi squeezes through, he goes through a door leading to Sluggy, whom he can beat by hitting his heart a few times. A flying Shy Guy with a RED COIN swoops down.
